What SGK Glasses Coverage Actually Includes

For people covered by general health insurance, SGK contributes to the cost of lenses and frames within certain limits. So glasses are not entirely free. The institution sets a fixed amount, and if your chosen product costs more, you pay the difference.

The contribution is defined separately for lenses and for frames. The frame share stays more limited than the lens share. For most people, that is why the extra payment mainly comes from the frame.

To use this entitlement your insurance has to be active. Whether you are self-employed, an employee, a civil servant or a retiree does not change how it works, since everyone falls under the same general health insurance. If your coverage is frozen because of unpaid premiums, the system returns no authorisation, and you would need to settle the matter with SGK first.

It All Starts With a Doctor's Prescription

For SGK-covered glasses you always need a prescription written by an eye specialist. We can measure your prescription, and that matters for making your glasses correctly, but the institution's payment depends on the doctor's prescription. The two do not replace each other.

You can get the prescription from a state hospital, a university hospital or a private hospital under agreement with SGK. Prescriptions are now largely issued electronically. So even if the paper in your hand goes missing, we can reach the information through the system.

What the Prescription Must Include

The prescription lists separate values for the right and left eye, the astigmatism value and axis if present, and a near addition where needed. The doctor's stamp, the date of issue and the patient's identity details also have to be complete. If you arrive with an incomplete one, we tell you up front rather than starting a procedure that cannot finish.

If you are not sure whether your prescription has changed, you can have an eye test at our shop to see where you stand, then decide whether to visit a doctor. This can save you an unnecessary hospital appointment.

When a Medical Report Comes Into Play

A standard pair of distance or near glasses needs no separate medical board report, and the prescription is enough. A report is mainly needed in special cases. For special-purpose lenses tied to certain diagnoses, or for unusual requests, the institution may ask for extra documents.

Contact lenses are a separate matter. Lens costs are not always covered and are usually tied to specific medical indications, with a report required. Lenses used purely by preference or for cosmetic reasons fall outside the scope.

How the Process Works at an SGK-Contracted Optician

When you come in with your prescription, the first thing we do is an authorisation check. Using your ID number we look up your entitlement and see whether your glasses right is open. This takes a few minutes.

If your entitlement is open, we choose a frame and lenses. Once the selection is done, we record the procedure and collect the covered portion directly from SGK ourselves. You only pay the difference, if there is any. There is no need to pay the full amount first and claim it back later.

The check can also show that your entitlement is closed. When that happens, we look at the reason together. Sometimes the required time has not yet passed, and sometimes a procedure used earlier at another optician shows up in the system. Glasses bought through a spouse's or child's insurance can lead to a similar result.

A spouse, child or parent without their own insurance can benefit as a dependant. The check is then run with the ID of the person who will use the glasses, not the insured one.

How long the glasses take to prepare depends on the lens type. Standard single-vision lenses are quick, while special coatings, thinner lenses or progressives may need a few days. We tell you the exact delivery date when you choose.

Are Lenses or Frames Covered

Both are within scope, but both have an upper limit. On the lens side the amount is defined by your prescription and lens type. Choosing thin lenses, progressives or a special coating raises the chance of going above that limit.

The situation is clearer with frames. The share the institution sets aside stays below most models on the market, so the frame is the main source of the extra payment. Our shop also carries options where this difference stays low, and we can look together.

How Often a New Entitlement Arises

For adults a glasses entitlement is not renewed until a certain period passes, and in practice that period is three years. So you cannot get an institution contribution for a new pair until three years have gone by since your last glasses.

The known exception is a meaningful change in your prescription. If a difference is documented in the doctor's prescription, an entitlement can arise before the time is up, and the difference sought is usually around half a dioptre. In these borderline cases we do not speak with certainty before running the check, because the system's answer varies from person to person.

What You Can Do If Your Time Is Not Up

If your lens is scratched or your frame is broken, a solution can be found even before the period ends. A lens replacement can be done on your existing frame, and a broken hinge or nose pad can often be repaired. Bring your glasses in and let us look at the repair option first.

The Difference Between Children and Adults

For children the entitlement period is much shorter. Children under eighteen have a glasses entitlement once a year. The reason is that a child's eye changes quickly and the prescription is likely to be updated often.

Frame durability is a separate issue with children's glasses. A broken frame can create a need for new glasses before the year is out, so we lean toward flexible, sturdy models. Looks come second here.

Children also carry a risk of lazy eye. A prescription difference caught early directly affects the chance of treatment, and if left too late glasses alone may not be enough. This is why we recommend regular check-ups for school-age children.

When handling a procedure for a child, the parent's ID has to be with you. The child's own ID or birth certificate is also needed, otherwise the check cannot be done.
