Why We See Worse at Night

The retina at the back of the eye holds two kinds of light-sensing cells. One kind handles colour and detail in daylight, while the other takes over in low light but is far weaker at fine detail and telling colours apart. Because that second group leads in darkness, the image naturally looks coarser, less colourful, and less sharp.

On top of that comes a drop in contrast. During the day the difference between grey asphalt and a white line stands out, but at night that difference shrinks sharply. What Changes When the Pupil Widens

Halos and Glare from Oncoming Headlights

The ring-shaped brightness seen around a light source is what we call a halo, and the temporary dazzling of the eye is what we call glare. Because modern LED and xenon headlights give off a more intense, bluer light than the old yellow ones, this effect draws more complaints in recent years.

As light passes through the clear structures inside the eye, some of it scatters. If the tear film is disrupted, the corneal surface is dry, or the lens inside the eye has clouded slightly with age, this scatter increases. Scratches, fingerprints, and a thin film of oil on your lenses do the same job. So a halo does not always come from the eye, sometimes it is just a dirty lens.

Which Signs Are Normal and Which Need a Check

  • An adjustment lag of a few minutes when you move from a bright place onto a dark road
  • Brief dazzling from an oncoming car's high beam, with vision that recovers quickly once the car has passed
  • More reflection on wet asphalt in rainy weather and reduced visibility of road lines

Signs Worth Getting Checked

  • If it takes noticeably longer for your vision to return to normal after a headlight passes
  • If the halo around lights has visibly grown over the past few months
  • If you read traffic signs or street signs at night much later than you do during the day
  • If you feel one kind of blur in one eye and a different one in the other

What Lens Coatings Do and Don't Do

An anti-reflective coating reduces the light bouncing back off both surfaces of the lens. This has a concrete payoff at night. The headlight of the car behind you no longer reflects off the inner surface of your lens into your eyes, and the ghost ring around oncoming light drops noticeably. Still, it helps to set the right expectation. An anti-reflective coating does not correct your eye's own optical error, does not raise your contrast perception, and does not remove age-related clouding in the eye's lens. What it does is take unnecessary lens-borne glare out of the way, and that alone is worth having.

Scratched, hazy lenses, or ones whose coating has started to peel in places, scatter far more light at night. For glasses in this state, lens replacement is often the quickest fix. If the frame is sound, you do not need to replace it.

Do Yellow Night Driving Glasses Really Work

We want to be honest about this one. Yellow or amber-tinted night driving glasses filter out part of the blue light, and to some people the lights look softer. That subjective relief can be real.

But the filter also reduces the total amount of light reaching your eyes. In an already dark setting, dimming the light can shorten the distance at which you notice a pedestrian or an obstacle at the roadside. This loss is felt more clearly in older drivers in particular, because the light entering the eye has already fallen with age.

Most of the studies on the subject fail to show that yellow lenses improve night vision performance in any measurable way. Some drivers find them useful because they feel more comfortable, which is a separate thing. We do not present yellow lenses to anyone as safety equipment. What really makes a difference is the correct prescription and a clean lens with an anti-reflective coating.

Wearing sunglasses or dark-tinted lenses at night is strongly discouraged. They cut down already limited vision even further and lengthen your reaction time. Visual safety should not be traded for a sense of comfort.
