One of the most common questions we hear at our shop in Kemalpaşa is why two pairs of glasses with the same prescription can look so different, one thin and one clearly thick. Many people who wear glasses around İzmir assume the frame is the reason, yet the real factor is the lens material and its refractive index.

Even when the prescription stays the same, the right material and the right index can visibly cut the edge thickness. Below we have gathered, in plain language, what each lens type is good for, what the index numbers actually tell you, and how to reach thin eyeglass lenses when your prescription is strong.

Why Lenses Get Thicker

A lens bends light to move the focal point onto the retina. As the correcting power grows, the difference in curvature between the front and back surfaces widens, and that means extra material. In lenses for nearsightedness this excess builds up at the edges, while in lenses for farsightedness it bulges in the center.

At low prescriptions the difference usually goes unnoticed. Up to around -2.00 a standard lens stays thin enough. From -4.00 and up the edges start to spill past the frame, make the eye look smaller than it is, and shift the weight of the glasses onto the nose.

With prescriptions that carry a high cylinder value for astigmatism, the thickness spreads across the lens unevenly. When the right and left eye differ in strength, one side can come out clearly thicker, which throws the balance of the glasses off.

The Main Differences Between Lens Materials

The materials used in eyeglass lenses fall into three main groups. Which one suits you depends on your prescription, your frame type, and your daily habits. The same prescription can be made in all three, but the resulting thickness, weight, and durability differ quite a bit.

Organic Lenses (CR-39)

CR-39 is the classic plastic lens material that has been in use for a long time. It has a 1.50 index, is lighter than mineral glass, and offers high optical clarity. At low prescriptions it is genuinely a strong choice.

Its weak points are limited impact resistance and how quickly it thickens as the prescription grows. When CR-39 is chosen for a strong prescription, the edge thickness rarely fits into the groove of most modern frames.

Polycarbonate and Trivex

Polycarbonate sits at a 1.59 index and is highly resistant to breaking. For children's glasses, sports use, and screwed rimless mounts, this group is usually our first choice.

Trivex offers durability close to polycarbonate while performing better on optical clarity. Both give a thinner and lighter result than CR-39, though on very strong prescriptions neither is thin enough on its own.

Mineral Glass

Mineral glass is, as the name suggests, made from real glass. It is the most scratch resistant option and its optical quality is very good. It also comes in 1.60, 1.70, and higher indexes.

On the other hand it is heavy and can shatter under a hard blow. We do not recommend it for children or active use. Because of its weight it can leave a mark on the nose even when it is thin at a high prescription.

Another drawback of mineral glass is its limited cutting flexibility. Since the risk of cracking rises when fitting it into modern thin frames, it cannot be used with every model.

What Refractive Index Means

The refractive index is a number that shows how strongly a material bends light. The higher the number, the less material is needed to reach the same optical power, so the lens gets thinner in proportion.

The common index values line up like this.

  • 1.50 standard organic lens, economical and clear at low prescriptions
  • 1.56 a middle ground that gives a slight gain in thinness
  • 1.60 a visible reduction at medium prescriptions
  • 1.67 the thin structure preferred at high prescriptions
  • 1.74 the thinnest option, for very strong prescriptions

As the index rises the Abbe value of the material drops, which means slight color fringing at the lens edges. Choosing an index your prescription does not call for gives you no advantage in vision quality.

Another misconception is the idea that a thin lens is automatically light. As the index rises the density of the material usually rises too. So the lens gets thinner but may not turn out as light as you expect. Low density polycarbonate has the edge here.

Which Index Suits Which Prescription

There is no exact rule that fits everyone, but at our shop we generally work from these ranges.

  • from 0.00 to -2.00, a 1.50 or 1.56 is enough
  • from -2.00 to -4.00, a 1.56 or 1.60 is more suitable
  • from -4.00 to -6.00, we suggest a 1.60 or 1.67
  • above -6.00, the 1.67 and, when needed, the 1.74 come into play

In farsighted prescriptions the thickness collects in the center, so the threshold kicks in a little earlier. Your cylinder value has to be taken into account as well. If there is more than two diopters of difference between your two eyes, applying a different index to each eye to balance the thicker side is also an option. This choice often improves both the look of the glasses and the way the weight sits on the nose.

Frame Choice Also Decides Thin Lenses

A high index on its own works no miracles. The larger the area the lens is cut into, the thicker the edge gets, because material builds up as you move away from the optical center.

Small and near round frames give a real gain with lenses for nearsightedness. In wide, angular frames that are too large for the face, the same lens looks clearly thicker. In rimless or half rim models the thickness stands out more, so material choice matters even more.

Measuring the pupil distance correctly also affects thickness. When the optical center is placed wrong, the lens thickens needlessly on one side and the eye is strained by an unintended prism effect. Aspheric designs flatten the surface curvature and improve both the thinness and how large the eye looks from outside.

There is one more method used to hide the thick edge that remains. Edge polishing and a thinness cut do not remove the thickness entirely, but they make the edge less visible under light. At a high prescription this small touch tidies up the overall look of the glasses in a noticeable way.

What We Watch For During Lens Replacement in İzmir

One of the most frequent requests around İzmir is fitting new lenses into an existing frame. In that case we first check the frame's lens groove, the mounting type, and material fatigue. A worn acetate frame can carry a high index lens, but with screwed rimless mounts we may need to lean toward polycarbonate.

If the prescription has changed, a fresh measurement is essential. After taking your current values with an eye test, during the lens replacement we talk through which index will actually deliver a gain. Sometimes, instead of moving up an index, dropping the frame down a size gives a better result.

How a Thin Lens Order Works in Kemalpaşa

Questions We Often Get

Is the highest index always the best choice? No. If your prescription is low, a high index makes no difference and can even be a step backward for optical clarity.

Is an anti reflective coating necessary on a thin lens? Not required, but we recommend it. Since high index lenses reflect more light, a coating improves both image clarity and comfort while driving at night.
