Eyeglass care really comes down to a few minutes of habit. Done properly, the lens coating lasts its full life and the frame keeps its shape for a long time. We walk through the daily routine, the most common mistakes, and the point where the glasses are better left to a specialist.
Where Those Scratches on Your Lenses Actually Come From
A very thin layer of dust settles on your lenses over the course of a day. That dust holds tiny grains of sand, pollen and metal particles. When you wipe a dry lens, you drag those particles across the surface like sandpaper.
Most scratches do not appear in one go. They build up over months. The fine web you see when you hold the lens up to the light is usually the sum of hundreds of dry wipes. On anti-reflective lenses the marks show more clearly, because the coating layer is softer than the glass underneath.
Once a scratch forms, there is no way back. Polish, paste or home remedies like toothpaste only ruin the coating further. So the only sensible approach to care is to prevent the scratch in the first place.
The Right Order for Daily Cleaning
Proper cleaning has a single condition, remove the dust first. Water does that, a cloth does not. The order below is quick and easy on the lens.
- Hold the glasses under lukewarm tap water for a few seconds and let the surface dust run off.
- Put a drop of unscented dish soap on your fingertip and spread it gently over the lenses and frame.
- Rub gently between the hinges and under the nose pads with your finger.
- Rinse again with lukewarm water and leave no soap residue.
- Dry with a clean microfiber cloth, without pressing, using flat strokes.
Doing this once a day is enough for most people. When a small smudge appears in the middle of the day, spraying a cleaning solution on the lens and then wiping is far safer than struggling with a dry cloth.
Pinching the lens between two fingers while drying is another common mistake. The pressure shifts the lens inside the frame and, on thin metal frames, can open up the rim. Touching both sides of the lens with the cloth at once and moving with light strokes is enough.
Which Cloth and Which Liquid Actually Work
Microfiber cloth is the standard for eyeglass cleaning because its fibers trap dust between them. The cloth handed to you when you buy your glasses is made for exactly this. Replacing a lost one is a small expense, nothing compared to changing a lens.
On the liquid side there are two reasonable options. Eyeglass cleaning sprays sold at optical stores are made to be compatible with coatings. At home, lukewarm water and a drop of unscented dish soap do the same job and more.
When using a spray, one puff per lens is enough rather than soaking one spot. Excess liquid seeps into the lens groove of the frame and the hinge gap and stays there, over time causing salt buildup on the metal parts. Take care not to aim the liquid directly at the temple joint of the frame.
The microfiber cloth gets dirty too
A dirty cloth does not clean, it scratches. Hand washing the cloth in lukewarm water every two weeks and letting it air dry is enough. Do not use fabric softener, because it leaves a film between the fibers and the cloth stops picking up dust.
Rather than carrying the cloth in your pocket or the bottom of your bag, keep it inside the glasses case. A cloth loose in a pocket collects dust and lint quickly.
Single-use wipes for the road
Single-use wet wipes made for optics are a practical solution in the car and in a bag. Stay away from ones with a high alcohol content, and the packaging should say they suit coated lenses. Baby wipes or surface wipes are not right for glasses, since their moisturizer leaves a film on the lens.
Common Habits That Damage Your Glasses
Almost every lens that reaches our store with a peeling coating shares the same few habits. Staying away from them noticeably extends the life of your glasses.
- The hem of a shirt or T-shirt. The fabric fibers are hard, they carry dust, and you are usually wiping dry. This is the number one cause of scratches.
- Paper tissue and napkins. Paper is made from cellulose and is hard on a microscopic scale. It leaves faint marks on the lens surface.
- Hot water. High heat loosens anti-reflective and blue light filter coatings. The cracking and peeling of a coating often starts here, lukewarm water is enough.
- Alcohol, cologne and ammonia cleaners. Surface cleaners made for household glass dissolve the lens coating and the frame paint.
- Fogging with saliva or breath. It offers no real lubrication, carries mouth bacteria onto the lens, and leaves a mark once it dries.
There is also the habit of resting glasses on top of your head. Hair oil transfers to the frame, the temples spread outward, and within a few weeks the glasses start sliding off the nose.
How You Store Them Prevents Half the Scratches
Setting your glasses down on a table with the lenses facing down can create a permanent scratch in a single move. When you have no choice, leave the temples open and turn the frame over so the lens surface does not touch the counter.
A hard case is the healthiest option. Soft pouches give no protection against pressure inside a bag. The car glovebox and dashboard are a bad idea too, because in an İzmir summer the temperature inside a car easily climbs to a level that softens the frame.
Taking your glasses off with one hand warps the frame over time. Removing them with both hands, holding both temples, balances the load on the hinges. It looks like a small detail, but the difference shows by the end of a year.
Home Care for Nose Pads, Screws and Hinges
Silicone nose pads are in constant contact with sweat and skin oil, so they yellow and harden over time. During your weekly cleaning, brushing under the pads with a soft toothbrush in soapy water is usually enough. A hardened pad irritates the skin and makes the glasses slip.
Screws loosen with use. If you feel a little play when opening and closing a temple, a quarter turn with the right size optical screwdriver usually solves it. Do not overdo it, because stripping the threads makes the job bigger.
Do not apply oil, petroleum jelly or anything similar to the hinge. Oil holds dust and locks up the mechanism over time. A squeaky hinge actually needs adjustment rather than oil, and that is handled in a few minutes as part of our frame repair service.
